Quantity and value of domestic trade in third quarter of 2015 decreases

The total quantity of domestic trade transactions via water and air decreased by 18.2 percent, from 4.12 million tons to 3.37 million tons during the third quarter of 2015.  About 99.7 percent were traded through water.

The total value of commodities that flowed within the country decreased by 37.4 percent from PHP144.397 billion in the third quarter of 2014 to PHP90.405 billion in the same period of 2015.

  Food and live animals leads total domestic trade value

In the third quarter of 2015, food and live animals amounting to PHP23.418 billion accounted for the biggest share in value of total domestic trade. This was followed by machinery and transport equipment with PHP20.541 billion (22.7%) and mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials with PHP15.286 billion (16.9%).

Machinery and transport equipment contributed the largest domestic trade value in the third quarter of 2014 amounting to PHP38.478 billion (26.6%) followed by food and live animals with PHP36.265 billion (25.1%) and manufactured goods classified chiefly by material with PHP19.525 billion (13.5%). Animal and vegetable oils, fats and waxes had the least domestic trade value amounting to PHP775.49 million (0.5%) in 2014 and PHP954.46 million (1.1%) in 2015.

 

Central Visayas tops in the value of domestic trade

Central Visayas reported the highest share on domestic trade at PHP22.859 billion (25.3%) in the third quarter of 2015.  Western Visayas ranked second with PHP17.940 billion (19.8%), followed by Northern Mindanao with PHP14.915 billion (16.5%) and Central Luzon PHP11.506 billion (12.7%).  Among regions, Cagayan Valley contributed the least share in value of domestic trade registering PHP5.00 thousand (0.0001%)  (Table 2).

Central Luzon leads the highest favorable trade balance

 In the third quarter of 2015, Central Luzon posted positive (favorable) trade balance at PHP11.155 billion.  Other regions with a billion mark positive (favorable) trade balances were:

  • Central Visayas, PHP5.179 billion;
  • Northern Mindanao, PHP4.063 billion;
  • Caraga, PHP3.741 billion; and
  • Western Visayas, PHP2.045 billion.

 

On the other hand, Eastern Visayas suffered negative (unfavorable) trade balance at PHP9.275 billion.  Other regions with a billion mark negative (unfavorable) trade balances include:

  • CALABARZON, PHP4.296 billion;
  • NCR, PHP3.691 billion;
  • MIMAROPA, PHP2.168 billion;
  • Zamboanga Peninsula, PHP1.935 billion;
  • Davao Region, PHP1.792 billion; and
  • Ilocos Region, PHP1.339 billion.

1. Commodity flow or domestic trade refers to the flow of commodities through the water, air and rail transport systems in the country.

    Data on the inflow and outflow of commodities in the different regions of the country are used to construct interregional and inter-industry relation tables. These serve as bases in the formulation and implementation of various regional development programs like countryside development and port planning.
