The total duck egg production from April to June 2020 was estimated at 13.76 thousand metric tons. This was lower by 1.0 percent compared with the previous year’s same quarter output of 13.89 thousand metric tons.

Among regions, Central Luzon was the top producer of duck egg during the quarter with 6.09 thousand metric tons. This was followed by CALABARZON with 1.78 thousand metric tons and Western Visayas with 1.21 thousand metric tons. The combined output of these three regions accounted for 66.0 percent of the country’s total duck egg production.

Compared with their levels in the same period of previous year, 11 regions recorded decreases in production during the period. Cagayan Valley, which generated an output of 0.46 thousand metric tons this quarter from 0.69 thousand metric tons in the same period of 2019, posted the highest decline of 33.2 percent. As of 01July 2020, duck laying flock inventory was estimated at 6.85 million birds or an increase of 12.8 percent compared with the previous year’s same period count of 6.07 million birds. Of the total duck laying flock, 49.2 percent were raised in backyard farms, while the remaining 50.8 percent were from commercial farms. (Figure 2 and Table 2)

The average farmgate price of duck egg in commercial farms during the quarter was PhP 6.65 per piece. This was higher by 1.1 percent from the average farmgate price of PhP 6.58 per piece in 2019.

During the reference period, the highest average farmgate price was observed in June at PhP 7.29 per piece, while the lowest was in April at PhP 6.15 per piece. (Figure 3 and Table 3)

TECHNICAL NOTES

This Duck Egg Situation Report presents the duck egg industry in terms of volume of production, laying flock inventory and average farmgate price. The report was prepared to serve as ready reference for PSA’s various clients and stakeholders in the agriculture sector. It is released quarterly; that is, every January, May, August and November.

Concepts and Definitions

Volume of production refers to the volume of duck egg disposed from locally-raised duck including those duck eggs which were shipped out to other region/province.

Inventory refers to the actual number of duck present in the farm as of a specific reference date.

Farmgate price refers to the price received by raisers for their produce at the location of farm. Thus, the marketing costs such as the transport and other marketing cost (if any) incurred in selling the produce is not included in the farmgate prices.
