Year-on-Year

The annual growth of the General Wholesale Price Index (GWPI) at the national level went up to 0.2 percent in February from -0.4 percent in January. It resulted from the faster annual increment in the heavily-weighted food index at 3.3 percent in February from 1.6 percent in January and the double-digit annual rate in beverages and tobacco index at 20.1 percent from 15.6 percent. Upward annual adjustments were likewise recorded in the corresponding indices of manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials and machinery and transport equipment at 1.2 percent and 2.3 percent from 1.1 percent and 2.2 percent, respectively. On the other hand, the crude materials, inedible except fuels index dropped by 23.5 percent from -26.6 percent; mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, -4.4 percent from -3.6 percent; and chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats, -2.5 percent from -3.6 percent. The annual movement in miscellaneous manufactured articles index remained at 0.8 percent.

  • A negative annual change of 0.4 percent was still registered in the GWPI in Luzon in February from -1.1 percent in January. Annual declines were posted in the indices of the following commodity groups: crude materials, inedible except fuels, -25.3 percent from -29.7 percent; mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, -5.2 percent from -4.1 percent; and chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats, -3.7 percent from -5.0 percent. However, the annual growth in the food index went up to 3.4 percent from 1.4 percent; beverages and tobacco index, 18.0 percent from 12.4 percent; manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials, 0.7 percent from 0.5 percent; and miscellaneous manufactured articles index, 0.8 percent from 0.7 percent. The growth in machinery and transport equipment index remained at its last month’s rate of 2.7 percent.

  • In Visayas, the annual adjustment in the wholesale prices of commodities advanced to 2.1 percent in February from 1.7 percent in January. Higher annual hike was noted in the food index at 1.0 percent in February from 0.8 percent in January; beverages and tobacco index, 27.2 percent from 26.2 percent; mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials index, 5.5 percent from 2.0 percent; chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats index, 0.9 percent from 0.4 percent; machinery and transport equipment index, 0.2 percent from 0.1 percent; and miscellaneous manufactured articles index, 0.8 percent from 0.3 percent. The index for manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials moved at its last month’s annual rate of 0.2 percent.

  • The annual increment in the GWPI in Mindanao likewise grew by 4.6 percent in February from 3.9 percent in January. The annual adjustment in the food index rose 5.5 percent in February from 3.3 percent in January; crude materials, inedible except fuels index, 7.3 percent from 1.0 percent; chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats, 3.0 percent from 2.9 percent; and machinery and transport equipment index, 1.8 percent from 1.0 percent. The annual mark-up in the manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials index however slowed down to 4.7 percent from 5.5 percent. The mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials index dropped by 0.1 percent from 0.8 percent while the beverages and tobacco index moved at its last month’s rate of 28.8 percent and the miscellaneous manufactured articles index, 1.6 percent.

  • By Commodity Group, Month-on-Month

Measured from a month ago level, the GWPI at the national level inched up 0.9 percent in February from 0.8 percent in January. The food index posted a monthly increase of 0.6 percent from 0.2 percent; mineral fuels, lubricants and related material index, 2.1 percent from 0.5 percent; and miscellaneous manufactured articles index, 0.1 percent from -0.1 percent. From zero growth, the indices of manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials and machinery and transport equipment rose 0.2 percent and 0.1 percent, respectively. However, the increment in beverages and tobacco index eased to 3.9 percent from a double-digit growth of 14.6 percent; crude materials, inedible except fuels index, 0.1 percent from 2.4 percent; and chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats index, 0.1 percent from 0.6 percent.

Price hikes in gasoline, diesel and kerosene pushed up the mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials index in Luzon and in the Philippines by 2.1 percent from 0.5 percent and in Visayas, 3.4 percent from 1.2 percent. On the other hand, the group’s index in Mindanao registered a negative monthly rate of 0.2 percent as reductions were still noticed in the prices of LPG.

Uptick in the prices of selected fish species, pork, beef, sardines and some fruits and vegetables raised the food index in Mindanao by 2.6 percent. Contributing to the uptrend were the add-ons in the prices of sugar, manufactured ice and poultry feeds. In Luzon, a growth of 0.4 percent was noted in its group’s index as higher prices of similar food items were noted during the month. Likewise, the group’s index in Visayas inched up by 0.1 percent. This was attributed to the upward price adjustments in eggs, pork, selected fruits and vegetables and cooking oil. Thus, the national index grew 0.6 percent.

The manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials index in the Philippines and in Luzon climbed 0.2 percent. This was effected by the increments in the prices of cement, glass and glass products, fabricated wire products and other manufactured goods. In Mindanao, the 0.1 percent hike in the group’s index was due to upward adjustment in the prices of some paper and paper products, cement, selected hardware items and glass products. In Visayas, prices of manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials generally remained stable as its group’s index had a zero growth.

The 1.1 percent growth in the machinery and transport equipment index in Mindanao was brought about by the price mark-ups in electric bulbs, fluorescent tubes and insulated electrical wires. Likewise, higher prices of insulated electrical wires effected the 0.2 percent growth in its group’s index in Visayas. Meanwhile, add-ons in the prices of selected electric bulbs and fluorescent tubes were offsetted by lower prices of some electrical wires in Luzon. Hence, a zero growth was observed in the group’s index in the area. The group’s index at the national level moved up by 0.1 percent.

The continuous price increase in liquors and cigarettes pushed up the beverages and tobacco index in the Philippines by 3.9 percent; Luzon, 5.0 percent; and Visayas, 0.5 percent. These were however slower than their respective last month’s rates of 14.6 percent, 12.1 percent, and 23.0 percent. On the other hand, the group’s index in Mindanao had a zero growth.

The index for crude materials, inedible except fuels in Mindanao jumped by 3.0 percent due to the increases in the prices of firewood and charcoal. In Luzon, prices of rattan were on the uptrend. Thus, its group’s index rose 0.2 percent. This was however slower than its last month’s rate of 2.8 percent. Meanwhile, reduction in the prices of copra and adobe blocks further pushed down its group’s index in Visayas by 2.2 percent from -1.9 percent. These mixed price trends triggered a 0.1 percent growth in the group’s national index.

The chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats index in Mindanao moved up by 0.2 percent as fertilizers, paints, varnishes, vulcanizing cement and selected vitamins were priced higher during the period. Similarly, price gains in paints, some pharmaceutical preparations and cosmetics raised the group’s index in Luzon and in the Philippines by 0.1 percent, slower than their last month’s rate of 0.6 percent. Meanwhile, movement in the group’s index in Visayas remained stable as it recorded a zero percent change during the month.

The miscellaneous manufactured articles index in Visayas grew by 0.6 percent. This was brought about by the price hikes in PVC electrical pipes and selected undergarments in the area. Upward adjustments in the prices of some undergarments and other miscellaneous manufactured articles pulled up its group’s index in Mindanao by 0.2 percent. In Luzon, higher prices of selected sanitary fixtures and other miscellaneous manufactures were posted during the month while downward adjustments were noticed in the prices of some PVC pipes. These offsetting price movements resulted to a zero growth in the group’s index in the area. The national index went up 0.1 percent from -0.1 percent.
