The volume of goat production in the second quarter of 2018 was 2.08 percent lower than last year’s record of 18,067 metric tons, liveweight. (Table 1) Nine (9) regions posted decreases in production. Four (4) of the major producing regions, which were Central Visayas (20.09%), Central Luzon (18.75%), Davao Region (4.89%), and Western Visayas (0.30%) recorded decline in output. The combined shares of these regions was 37.56 percent of the country’s total goat production.

As of July 1, 2018, total inventory of goat was 3.78 million heads. This was 0.18 percent higher than last year’s stocks of 3.77 million heads. (Table 2) Inventory of goat in backyard farms went up by 0.22 percent while commercial stocks declined by 2.98 percent. Central Visayas, Western Visayas and Ilocos Region were the top three (3) regions in terms of goat population. These regions shared 39.33 percent of the country’s total goat inventory.

The second quarter 2018 average farmgate price of goat for slaughter was PhP 136.79 per kilogram, liveweight. This was 10.92 percent higher than the 2017 average price of PhP 123.32 per kilogram, liveweight. (Table 3)

TECHNICAL NOTES
This Goat Situation Report presents the goat industry in terms of volume of production, inventory by farm type and average farmgate price. The report was prepared to serve as ready reference for our various clients and stakeholders in the agriculture sector. It is released quarterly in January, May, August and November every year.
Concepts and Definitions
Volume of Production refers to the volume of locally-raised animals disposed for slaughter which include animals shipped-out to other region/province. This is expressed in thousand metric tons, liveweight.
Inventory refers to the actual number of domesticated animals present in the farm as of a specific reference date.
Farmgate Price refers to the price received by farmers, livestock and poultry raisers for the sale of their produce at the first point of sale net of freight.
