Goat production in the 1st quarter of 2018 was 0.18 percent higher than last year’s record of 19.19 thousand metric tons, liveweight.  Nine (9) out of 16 regions posted increases in production. Central Luzon, Ilocos Region and Central Visayas were the major producers of goat with recorded outputs of 2,727 metric tons2,465 metric tons, and 2,395 metric tons, respectively. The combined share of these 3 regions to the country’s total goat production was 39.00 percent.  
 
 
 
 
As of January 1, 2018, total inventory of goat (3,724,791 heads) increased by 0.39 percent compared with the same period last year.  Inventory of goat in backyard farms inched up by 0.49 percent while commercial stocks went down by 6.77 percent.  Western Visayas, Central Visayas and Ilocos Region were the top three (3) regions with the highest number of goat. These regions shared 39.24 percent of the country’s total goat inventory. 
 
 
 
 
The first quarter 2018 average farmgate price of goat for slaughter (PhP 131.73 per kilogram) was 8.92 percent higher than the 2017 price of Php 120.94 per kilogram, liveweight.
 
 

 

Technical Notes

This Goat Situation Report presents the goat industry in terms of volume of production, inventory by farm type and average farmgate prices. The report was prepared to serve as ready reference for our various clients and stakeholders in the agriculture sector. It is released quarterly in January, May, August and November every year.
 
Concepts and Definitions:
 
Volume of Production refers to the volume of locally-raised animals disposed for slaughter which include animals shipped-out for slaughter. This is expressed in thousand metric tons, liveweight.
 
Inventory refers to the actual number of domesticated animals present in the farm as of a specific reference date.
 
Farmgate Price refers to the price received by farmers, livestock and poultry raisers for the sale of their produce at the first point of sale net of freight.
