The total goat production from October to December 2020 was estimated at 20.55 thousand metric tons, liveweight. This was -0.8 percent lower compared with the previous year’s same quarter output of 20.71 thousand metric tons, liveweight. 

Among the regions, Central Visayas was the top producer of goat during the quarter with a production of 3.07 thousand metric tons, liveweight. This was followed by Central Luzon and Ilocos Region with corresponding productions of 2.32 thousand metric tons, liveweight and 2.21 thousand metric tons, liveweight. These three regions comprised 36.9 percent of the country’s total goat production.

Relative to their levels in the same period of 2019, nine regions showed reductions in production during the quarter, with Ilocos Region recording the highest annual decrease of -18.8 percent.  This region recorded a production of 2.21 thousand metric tons, liveweight during the period, from 2.72 thousand metric tons, liveweight in the same quarter of 2019.

As of 01 January 2021, the total goat inventory in the country was estimated at 3.91 million heads.  This was 2.5 percent higher than the 3.81 million heads population in the same period of 2020. Goat population in backyard farms improved by 2.6 percent from the 3.76 million heads in the same period of 2020. On the other hand, stock in commercial farms went down by -7.9 percent compared with its previous year’s stocks of 51.77 thousand heads. Of the total goat population, 98.8 percent were raised in backyard farms while the remaining 1.2 percent were from commercial farms.

The top three regions in terms of inventory were Central Visayas, Western Visayas, and Ilocos Region. These regions accounted for 40.5 percent of the country’s total goat inventory.

The average farmgate price of goat for slaughter during the quarter was quoted at PhP 162.93 per kilogram, liveweight. This was 5.7 percent higher than the average price of PhP 154.15 per kilogram, liveweight, in the same quarter of 2019.

During the reference period, the highest farmgate price of goat for slaughter was recorded in December at PhP 168.96 per kilogram, liveweight, while the lowest was in October at PhP 156.85 per kilogram, liveweight.

TECHNICAL NOTES

This Goat Situation Report presents the goat industry in terms of volume of production, inventory by farm type, and average farmgate price. The report is prepared to serve as a ready reference for PSA’s various clients and stakeholders in the agriculture sector. It is released quarterly; that is, every February, May, August, and November.

Concepts and Definitions

Volume of production refers to the volume of locally-raised goat disposed for slaughter including those which were shipped out to other regions/provinces for slaughter. This is expressed in metric tons, liveweight.

Inventory refers to the actual number of goat present in the farm as of a specific reference date.  For this report, the inventory of goat is as of  01 January 2021.

Farmgate price refers to the price received by raisers for their produce at the location of farm. Thus, the marketing costs, such as the transport and other marketing cost (if any) incurred in selling the produce, are not included in the farmgate prices.
