- Value of Production tapers in April 2011
Value of Production Index (VaPI) for total manufacturing slowed down in April 2011 as it posted a growth of 4.0 percent, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). This maybe largely attributed in the diminished production values of basic metals and miscellaneous manufactures. However, eight of 12 major sectors reported two-digit increases in production values, namely: non-metallic mineral products, rubber and plastic products, petroleum products, publishing and printing, beverages, fabricated metal products, chemical products and paper and paper products. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
On the other hand, VaPI on a monthly comparison slid 4.7 percent from a 4.3 percent increase in March 2011. Sixteen major sectors influenced the decrease in production values led by leather products registering a decline of 34.8 percent. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
- Volume of Production decelerates as well
On a year-on-year basis, Volume of Production Index (VoPI) likewise posted a slower growth of 2.6 percent. This was accounted mainly by the decline in production output of the basic metals industry. However, nine major sectors contributed significant increases in value of production, namely: non-metallic mineral products, beverages, publishing and printing, paper and paper products, furniture and fixtures, rubber and plastic products, chemical products, miscellaneous manufactures and fabricated metal products. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
On a month-on-month basis, VoPI, reflected a decrement of 4.3 percent in April 2011 compared with 4.5 percent growth recorded in the previous month. This is explained the contraction in production output observed in following major sectors: leather products, transport equipment, miscellaneous manufactures, furniture and fixtures, chemical products and fabricated metal products. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
- Value of Net Sales posts a slower growth
Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) registered a year-on-year growth of 7.9 percent in April 2011. This is attributed to the two-digit growth in sales value reported by seven major sectors, namely: rubber and plastic products, food manufacturing, textiles, chemical products, basic metals, footwear and wearing apparel and petroleum products. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
On a monthly comparison, VaNSI went down by 7.2 percent in April 2011. Among the 17 major sectors reporting decreases in sales value, 10 sectors posted two-digit decrement, namely: furniture and fixtures, miscellaneous manufactures, transport equipment, tobacco products, leather products, electrical machinery, fabricated metal products, chemical products, footwear and wearing apparel and textiles. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
- Volume of Net Sales likewise slows down
Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) shrank as it recorded an annual increase of 6.6 percent in April 2011. Major contributors to the growth in sales volume were observed in the following: furniture and fixtures, rubber and plastic products, chemical products, paper and paper products, food manufacturing, and footwear and wearing apparel. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
On a month-on-month basis, VoNSI dropped 6.8 percent in April 2011. Ten of the 17 major sectors reported two-digit decline, namely: furniture and fixtures, miscellaneous manufactures, tobacco products, leather products, transport equipment, chemical products, fabricated metal products, footwear and wearing apparel, electrical machinery and textiles. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
- Capacity Utilization
Average capacity utilization in April 2011 for total manufacturing stood at 82.8 percent. Ten of the 20 major sectors registered capacity utilization rates of 80 percent and more, namely: basic metals, food manufacturing, petroleum products, non-metallic mineral products, electrical machinery, chemical products, miscellaneous manufactures, paper and paper products, rubber and plastic products and machinery except electrical. Refer to Table 6.
The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 17.8 percent in April 2011. About 59.8 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 22.4 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.
Capacity Utilization | Percent Share |
---|---|
Below 50 percent | 4.5 |
50 percent - 59 percent | 7.3 |
60 percent - 69 percent | 10.6 |
70 percent - 79 percent | 20.5 |

90 percent - 100 percent | 17.8 |
- Response Rates
The response rates for the April 2011 MISSI and PPS are 85.6 percent and 92.8 percent, respectively. Refer to Tables 7 and 8

- Technical Notes
The Monthly Integrated of Selected Industries (MISSI) is one of the designated statistical activities undertaken by the National Statistics Office to provide flash indicators on the performance of growth-oriented industries in the manufacturing sector. The survey gathers monthly data on employment, compensation, production, net sales, inventories and capacity utilization.
The MISSI utilizes the Laspeyres-type method of index computation where the weights are computed from the value of production of the Census of Philippine Business and Industry (CPBI). Rebasing of data series is undertaken as soon as new CPBI are available.
For the 2010 MISSI index series with base year of 2000, the weights of the major sectors and sub-sectors were computed from the results of the 2000 CPBI for manufacturing establishments with average total employment of 20 and over.
The indicators generated from the 2010 MISSI are Value of Production Index (VaPI), Volume of Production Index (VoPI), Value of Net Sales (VaNSI), and Volume of Net Sales (VoNSI). However, the VoPI and VoNSI are derived indicators utilizing the Producer Price Index as deflator.
The industry coverage of the 2010 MISSI conforms with the amended 1994 PSIC groupings. There are 20 major sectors as shown below with 10 further disaggregated into sub-sectors.
PSIC CODE INDUSTRY DESCRIPTION 15 except 155 Food Manufacturing* 155 Beverages 16 Tobacco products 17 Textiles* 18,174 and 192 Footwear and wearing apparel 191 Leather products 20 Wood and wood products* 21 Paper and paper products 22 Publishing and printing 23 Petroleum products* 24 Chemical products* 25 Rubber and plastic products* 26 Non-metallic mineral products* 27 Basic metals* 28 Fabricated metal products 29 and 30 Machinery except electrical* 31 and 32 Electrical machinery* 34 and 35 Transport equipment 36 Furniture and fixtures 33 and 39 Miscellaneous manufactures Note: * - Major sectors categorized into sub-sectors
Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
