·  Value of Production maintains a two-digit negative rate

For the month of June, Value of Production Index (VaPI) of the manufacturing industry posted a slower decline of negative 12.8 percent compared with the year-ago decrease of 13.0 percent in May 2009, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). Significant reductions in value of production was exhibited for petroleum products with a decrease of 48.5 percent, followed by eight major sectors that posted two-digit decrements, namely: furniture and fixtures, leather products, paper and paper products, beverages, footwear and wearing apparel, basic metals, transport equipment, and chemical productsRefer to Tables 1-A and 1.

On a month-on-month comparison, VaPI on the other hand recorded an increase of 3.0 percent in June 2009. Thirteen major sectors contributed to the growth led bymiscellaneous manufactures, fabricated metal products, and electrical machineryRefer to Tables 1-A and 1.

·  Volume of Production is still down

Volume of Production Index (VoPI) continued to decrease at a slower rate of 10.8 percent, showing an improvement from its two-digit decrease of 12.1 percent in May 2009. Major sectors with two-digit decreases were observed in the following: leather products, footwear and wearing apparel, beverages, petroleum products, paper and paper products, chemical products, wood and wood products, furniture and fixtures, basic metals, machinery except electrical, transport equipment and publishing and printingRefer to Tables 1-B and 2.

However, VoPI maintained a month-on-month growth of 2.3 percent in June 2009. This was brought about by increases in production output observed in 13 major sectors, with two-digit growth in miscellaneous manufactures (20.3%), and electrical machinery (10.2%)Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

·  Value of Net Sales decreases further

On a yearly basis, Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) dipped further to 15.8 percent in June 2009 compared with the previous month's decrease of 14.5 percent. This was due to the drop in sales performance observed in following major sectors: petroleum products, furniture and fixtures, basic metals, leather products, paper and paper products, textiles, beverages, wood and wood products, and footwear and wearing apparelRefer to Tables 2-A and 3.

On a monthly basis, VaNSI continued to grow at a slower rate of 3.6 percent in June 2009. Eleven of 20 major sectors accounted for the increment in sales with significant values noted in the following: furniture and fixtures, basic metals, miscellaneous manufactures, electrical machinery, and beveragesRefer to Tables 2-A and 3.

·  Volume of Net Sales likewise drops

Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) on an annual basis decelerated to 13.9 percent in June 2009. Ten of the 13 major sectors accounted for the significant reductions in sales output: leather products, textiles, wood and wood products, basic metals, beverages, paper and paper products, footwear and wearing apparel, petroleum products, furniture and fixtures, and machinery except electrical.Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

VoNSI, on a month-on-month comparison, went up by 3.0 percent in June 2009. This was mainly due to the expansion in sales volume reported by the following major sectors: miscellaneous manufactures, basic metals, furniture and fixtures, electrical machinery, and beveragesRefer to Tables 2-B and 4.

·  Capacity Utilization

Average capacity utilization in June 2009 for total manufacturing was estimated at 81.5 percent. Ten (10) major sectors registered capacity utilization rates of 80% and more, namely: basic metals, food manufacturing, machinery except electrical, electrical machinery, leather products, paper and paper products, miscellaneous manufactures, chemical products, rubber and plastic productsand non-metallic mineral productsRefer to Table 6.

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 10.6 percent in June 2009. About 64.8 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 24.6 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

·  Technical Notes

Only the 2000 based series will be continued beginning the July 2008 issue.

Starting with the February 2008 issue, a revised industry disaggregation of the MISSI indices and PPI will be adopted to conform with the amended 1994 PSIC groupings.Rubber and Plastic Products is a new major sector, consisting of two subsectors, namely: Rubber Products and Plastic ProductsRubber Products was previously a major sector while Plastic Products was one of the sub-sectors of Chemical Products.

With previously seven (7) subsectors, the major sector of Chemical Products has now six (6) subsectors, namely: Basic Chemicals and Industrial Gases, Fertilizers, Paints, Drugs and Medicines, Cosmetics and Toilet Preparations, and Miscellaneous Chemicals.

The major sector of Machinery except Electrical has been split into two subsectors, namely: Machinery and Equipment, n.e.c. and Office, Accounting and Computing Machinery.

The corresponding weights of the above major sectors and sub-sectors have been recomputed to allow for the revised computation of the indices.

Starting 2008, weights for the PPI and Capacity Utilization Rates are based from the results of the 2005 Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry for manufacturing establishments with average total employment of 20 and over.

Thus, beginning the February 2008 issue, the VaPI, VoPI, VaNSI, VoNSI and the revised PPI for Total Manufacturing for all months of 2008 are computed based on the revised industry disaggregation.

Also, beginning with the January 2009 data, weights of the major sectors and sub-sectors for the PPI and Capacity Utilization Rate have been computed utilizing the results of the 2006 Census of Philippine Business and Industry for Manufacturing Establishments for ATE of 20 and over.

Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
