  • Value of Production maintains positive growth in June 2011

Value of Production Index (VaPI) for total manufacturing accelerated at a slower rate of 2.7 percent in June 2011, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). This was attributed to the slowdown in production values of the miscellaneous manufactures and chemical products. However, sectors contributing significant increases in value of production were observed in the following: furniture and fixtures, petroleum products, rubber and plastic products, beverages, paper and paper products, tobacco products and fabricated metal products. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

However, VaPI on a monthly comparison posted a decrement of less than one percent (0.2%) in June 2011, from a 4.0 percent growth in May 2011. The two major sectors that mainly influenced the decrease in production values were miscellaneous manufactures and petroleum products, registering a decline of 22.8 percent and 12.5 percent, respectively. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

  • Volume of Production decelerates

Volume of Production Index (VoPI) reflected a minimal annual drop of less than one percent or 0.2 percent in June 2011 from the previous month's growth of 1.9 percent. Sectors that mainly influenced the decrease in production output were the following: machinery except electrical, wood and wood products, transport equipment, basic metals, publishing and printing, leather products and food manufacturing. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

On a month-on-month basis, VoPI likewise fell 2.0 percent in June 2011 compared with 5.6 percent growth in the previous month. This was attributed to the diminished production outputs of miscellaneous manufactures, petroleum products and machinery except electrical. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.

  • Value of Net Sales sustains positive growth

Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) on a year-on-year performance continued to grow at a slower rate of 6.5 percent in June 2011. This may be attributed to the slowdown in the annual growth sales in petroleum products, miscellaneous manufactures, beverages and footwear and wearing apparel. While the major contributing sectors with significant increases in sales value were: food manufacturing, rubber and plastic products, chemical products, furniture and fixtures and publishing and printing. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

VaNSI, on a month- on-month basis, also grew at a slower rate of 1.0 percent in June 2011. Five of the 20 major sectors were significant contributors of growth, namely: leather products, transport equipment, tobacco products, publishing and printing and footwear and wearing apparel. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

  • Volume of Net Sales increases in June 2011

Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI), on a yearly comparison, registered an increment of 3.5 percent in June 2011. This is explained by the expansion in sales output observed in furniture and fixtures, with 92.5 percent growth. Major sectors that exhibited two-digit increases are food manufacturing, miscellaneous manufactures, chemical products, publishing and printing and rubber and plastic products. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

On the other hand, on a month-on-month basis, VoNSI slid 0.8 percent or less than one percent in June 2011. This was due to the significant decreases observed in seven major sectors, offsetting the increases reported by twelve (13) industry groups. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

  • Capacity Utilization

Average capacity utilization in June 2011 for total manufacturing stood at 83.2 percent. Eleven of the 20 major sectors registered capacity utilization rates of 80 percent and more, namely: basic metals, petroleum products, food manufacturing, non-metallic mineral products, electrical machinery, paper and paper products, chemical products, rubber and plastic products, miscellaneous manufactures, machinery except electrical and textiles. Refer to Table 6.

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 16.8 percent in June 2011. About 60.3 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 22.9 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

  • Technical Notes

The Monthly Integrated of Selected Industries (MISSI) is one of the designated statistical activities undertaken by the National Statistics Office to provide flash indicators on the performance of growth-oriented industries in the manufacturing sector. The survey gathers monthly data on employment, compensation, production, net sales, inventories and capacity utilization.

The MISSI utilizes the Laspeyres-type method of index computation where the weights are computed from the value of production of the Census of Philippine Business and Industry (CPBI). Rebasing of data series is undertaken as soon as new CPBI are available.

For the 2010 MISSI index series with base year of 2000, the weights of the major sectors and sub-sectors were computed from the results of the 2000 CPBI for manufacturing establishments with average total employment of 20 and over.

The indicators generated from the 2010 MISSI are Value of Production Index (VaPI), Volume of Production Index (VoPI), Value of Net Sales (VaNSI), and Volume of Net Sales (VoNSI). However, the VoPI and VoNSI are derived indicators utilizing the Producer Price Index as deflator.

The industry coverage of the 2010 MISSI conforms with the amended 1994 PSIC groupings. There are 20 major sectors as shown below with 10 further disaggregated into sub-sectors.
