On behalf of the Philippine Statistical System (PSS), the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) congratulates the winners of the 28th National Statistics Month (NSM) Awards as announced during the 29th NSM Closing Ceremony held on 29 October 2018 at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Assembly Hall, BSP Complex, Manila. The Closing Ceremony, hosted by the BSP, was attended by 378 participants from various government agencies, media, and the academe.

The winners of the 28th NSM Awards were:

• Best Statistical Activity conducted by a Government Organization
  o LISTAHANAN Statistical Activities and Anti-Poverty Symposium by the Department of Social and Welfare Development (DSWD) – MIMAROPA Region

• Best Statistical Activity conducted by a Private Organization
  o 28th NSM PESO Week Exhibit Eco-Graph by the Progressive Economists’ Solidarity Organization (PESO) of the Saint Louis University (SLU)

• Best Youth Group Advocate for Statistics
  o University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) Statistical Society

• Best NSM Region
  o Region II (Cagayan Valley)

In recognition of the strong support of local government units (LGUs) in the promotion of the importance of statistics, a new category “Best LGU Advocate for Statistics” was given. The 28th NSM’s “Best LGU Advocate for Statistics” was:

• The Provincial Government of Pangasinan

The Board of Judges for the 28th NSM Awards was composed of officials from the PSA, Department of Tourism (DOT), National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), BSP, Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Civil Service Commission (CSC), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Education (DepEd), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), DSWD, Intramuros Administration, National Parks Development Committee (NPDC), National Youth Commission (NYC), and the University of the Philippines School of Statistics (UPSS).

The awards were presented by PSA National Statistician and Civil Registrar General, Undersecretary Lisa Grace S. Bersales and BSP Deputy Governor Diwa C. Guinigundo. Each winner received a Plaque of Recognition and a cash prize of PhP 15,000.00.

The NSM Awards System has been instituted to provide incentives to participating agencies/organizations in the observance of the NSM. The NSM Awards are given in recognition of outstanding participation of agencies and regional offices, LGUs, youth organizations and the private sector in the NSM celebration.

The PSA will issue call for nominations for the 29th NSM Awards by January 2019. Activities which revolved around the 29th NSM theme, “Exploring Philippine Wonders in Numbers: Statistics Towards Sustainable Tourism Development,” are qualified for nomination.

After the awarding of plaques to the winners of the 28th NSM Awards, Undersecretary Bersales also gave Deputy Governor Guinigundo a special Plaque of Appreciation for his pivotal role in the advocacy of statistics, specifically as the prime mover behind the BSP’s annual hosting of the NSM Closing Ceremony.

On behalf of the PSS, the PSA expresses its gratitude to all government agencies, local government units, academic institutions, state universities and colleges, private sector, and the media at the national and local levels who actively participated in and supported the 29th NSM activities in this month-long celebration.
