The Philippines, represented by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), was again elected to the Governing Council of the United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP) under the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).  This was announced by the Chair, Vice Minister Vijavat Isarabhakdi, on the last day of the 78th Session of ESCAP on 27 May 2022. The Philippines was first a member of the Council for the term 2013-2016.

The Philippines, through the PSA, will serve its term from 2022 until 2025. As a Council member, the PSA will push for more capacity-building activities in the use of Big Data and other non-traditional data sources in generating official statistics integrating pilot projects to produce concrete and useful outcomes as well as focus on individual and long-term training plans for the working statisticians in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Governing Council of SIAP consists of a representative from the host country Japan and eight representatives elected by the Commission. The members and associate members to be elected by the Commission shall be elected for a period of three years but shall be eligible for re-election. Other elected members include China, India, Malaysia, the Republic of Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, and Bangladesh. The main function of SIAP is to review the administration and financial status of the Institute and the implementation of its program of work endorsing annual and long-term work plans.

The SIAP is a renowned professional statistics training center for government statisticians and others working on official statistics. It offers training designed to build the capacity of government personnel to produce, use, and disseminate reliable and timely statistics.
