The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and the Human Development Network (HDN) release today preliminary estimates of the subnational Human Development Indices (HDI) for the year 2012 using the interim methodology1 agreed upon by the former National Statistical Coordination Board (now part of PSA) and HDN in February 2012. The interim methodology was previously applied in estimating the 2009 subnational Human Development Indices.

The 2012 preliminary estimates are stand-alone estimates. Back-computations to 1997, for purposes of comparability over time, will be featured in the next volume of the Philippine Human Development Report.

Human development is a process of enlarging people's choices. The HDI measures the average achievement in a country in three basic dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, the acquisition of knowledge, and access to resources to obtain good standard of living.

The 2012 HDI and accompanying Technical Notes are available at the PSA and HDN (http://hdn.org.ph/) websites.

1Final methodologies are currently being reviewed by the relevant technical/interagency committees coordinated by the PSA, for approval by the PSA Board and inclusion in the official statistics regularly being generated by the PSA.
