The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) is set to conduct the 2017 Survey on Cost and Returns of Tomato Production after being approved through the Statistical Survey Review and Clearance System (SSRCS).
The survey aims to generate data on cost and returns of producing tomato. Particularly, the objectives of the survey are to update production costs structure; determine indicators of profitability such as gross and net returns, returns above cash costs, returns above variable costs; and come up with benchmark data sets on average use of material and labor inputs used in producing tomato.
The last survey on costs and returns of tomato production was undertaken in 1998. For this year, the survey will cover 450 sample farmers from six (6) tomato producing provinces – two (2) from each major island group. These provinces are Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Iloilo, Cebu, Bukidnon, and Misamis Oriental. The data collection for the survey will start in June 2017 in Luzon and Visayas and October 2017 in Mindanao. The data collection will be carried out through face-to-face interview.
Vital data to be collected from the sample farmers are:
- basic characteristics of the sample farmer, the farm, and the farmer’s household
- farm investment
- material inputs
- labor inputs
- other production costs
- production and disposition
- basic marketing and credit information
- access to support services
- problems related to production and marketing
- basic information on effects of climate change
- recommendations and future plans
A total of Php 3.6 million is allocated for the survey to cover for travelling expenses, trainings and seminar, supplies and materials, and printing/binding. The results of the survey are expected to be released in June 2018.
The 2017 Survey on Costs and Returns of Tomato Production was cleared for conduct on 22 May 2017 under the Statistical Survey Review and Clearance System (SSRCS), a mechanism being implemented by PSA by virtue of Rule 28 of Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of Republic Act No. 10625 to:
- ensure sound design for data collection;
- minimize the burden placed upon respondents;
- effect economy in statistical data collection;
- eliminate unnecessary duplication of statistical data collection; and
- achieve better coordination of government statistical activities.
Sample farmers to be selected as respondents of the survey are enjoined to participate in the said undertaking.
