The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) approved the conduct of the Longitudinal Cohort Study on the Filipino Child (Wave 4) by the Department of Health (DOH) and University of San Carlos (USC) - Office of Population Studies Foundation, Inc. on 14 November 2019 in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The survey aims to examine how the lives of the cohort participants will change as the government implements the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda by contributing to the study of population dynamics and sexual productive health and rights. Moreover, it will provide important information for national policy-making and development planning particularly on how the SDGs can contribute in maximizing the potentials of the Filipino youth.

A sample of 4,947 households will be selected from the three (3) major island groups: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao to participate in the survey to be undertaken from January to April 2020.

The data items that will be collected are the following:

  • Household information (composition and characteristics, basic utilities, sanitation and environmental assessment, household assets, income and expenses, food insecurity experience, access to facilities and commercial establishments, morbidity and health care)
  • Mother’s information (pregnancy history and family planning updates)
  • Index child’s information (education and employment, hygiene, height and weight measurement, health, happiness and aspirations, infant feeding and health history, activities, psychosocial health, emotional and behavioral problems, relationship with parents, risky behaviors, use of social media, violence, and pubertal assessment, disaster preparedness, sexual orientation and gender identity)
  • Community information (barangay characteristics, facilities, organizations, jobs and wage rates, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM), peace and order, prices on selected items)

A total budget of PhP 22.4 million is allocated for the conduct of the survey to cover personal services, travelling, supplies, printing and shipping expenses.

Results of the survey are expected to be released in August 2020.

The survey reviewed and cleared for conduct under the Statistical Survey Review and Clearance System (SSRCS), a mechanism being implemented by the PSA by virtue of Rule 28 of the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of Republic Act (RA) No. 10625 to:

  • ensure sound design for data collection;
  • minimize the burden placed upon respondents;
  • effect economy in statistical data collection;
  • eliminate unnecessary duplication of statistical data collection efforts; and
  • achieve better coordination of government statistical activities.

In line with this, the PSA enjoins the public to support the said survey.
