Food, Beverages and Tobacco (FBT) and Non-FBT Items
(NCR and AONCR - June 2008)

  1. CPI of Food, Beverages and Tobacco (FBT): National Capital Region (NCR) and Areas Outside the National Capital Region (AONCR)

The seasonally adjusted CPI of FBT items in NCR and AONCR correspondingly went up to 148.3 and 157.6 in June from their respective May levels of 146.3 and 152.9.

Seasonal factors such as the stormy weather conditions experienced in the latter part of the month caused delays in the delivery of vegetables from the production sites to the wet markets. Likewise, lesser fishing trips due to inclement weather conditions resulted to higher prices of fish in the markets in AONCR. These seasonal factors pushed up prices of FBT items in the two areas relative to the expected trend.

The monthly rate of change of the seasonally adjusted CPI of FBT items in NCR decelerated to 1.4 percent in June from 1.6 percent in May. Meanwhile, prices of seasonally adjusted CPI for FBT items in AONCR picked up to 3.1 percent from 1.8 percent.

  2. CPI of Non-FBT items: National Capital Region (NCR) and Areas Outside the National Capital Region (AONCR)

The seasonally adjusted CPI of non-FBT items in NCR and AONCR posted at their corresponding June levels of 161.9 and 156.2 were higher than their respective previous month’s levels of 160.7 and 154.4.

Higher demand for school supplies, clothing and footwear items brought about by the opening of classes pulled up prices of non-FBT items in NCR and AONCR. The practice of increasing tuition fees every start of the school year also raised prices of non-FBT items in the two areas.

The increase in the prices of seasonally adjusted CPI for non-FBT items in NCR at 0.7 percent in June was slower than the 0.9 percent registered in May. On the other hand, the month-on-month growth rate of the seasonally adjusted CPI for non-FBT items in AONCR rose by 1.2 percent from 0.7 percent.
