| Month-on-Month Growth Rates
The monthly growth of the seasonally adjusted CPI for all items at the national level improved to 0.2 percent in May from 0.4 percent in April. This can be attributed to the slower monthly increments observed in the indices of the following commodity groups: alcoholic beverages and tobacco (0.5% from 1.0%); clothing and footwear (0.8% from 1.2%); housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (0.2% from 0.6%); furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house (0.3% from 0.9%); health (0.4% from 0.7%); and recreation and culture (0.2% from 0.4%). Meanwhile, a monthly uptick in the restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services index was registered at 0.5 percent in May from 0.4 percent in April. The rate of change of the seasonally adjusted CPI for education was still at 0.4 percent. Seasonal factors such as the bigger production of selected goods for the forthcoming opening of classes in the country pushed up the indices for all items; alcoholic beverages and tobacco; clothing and footwear; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels; furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house; recreation and culture; and restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services. On the other hand, these seasonal factors pushed down the education index while no effect was seen in the health index.
On a monthly basis, the seasonally adjusted CPI in NCR for non-food and furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house correspondingly went up to 0.2 percent and 0.4 percent in May from zero growth and 0.3 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, a slower gain of 0.3 percent was noticed in the indices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco and education from their respective last month’s rates of 0.7 percent and 0.4 percent. The transport index further dropped to -0.5 percent from -0.3 percent. The seasonal factor of bigger production of some goods in preparation for the opening of classes pushed up the indices for alcoholic beverages and tobacco; non-food; furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house; and transport in the area. On the contrary, this seasonal factor pulled down the education index.
In AONCR, the monthly increase in the seasonally adjusted CPI eased to 0.4 percent in May for the following commodity groups: clothing and footwear, from 1.2 percent; furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house, from 1.1 percent; and health, from 0.8 percent. Likewise, the increment in alcoholic beverages and tobacco index slowed down to 0.5 percent from 1.1 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, 0.2 percent from 0.9 percent; recreation and culture index, 0.2 percent from 0.5 percent; and education index, 0.3 percent from 0.4 percent. However, the restaurant and miscellaneous goods index inched up by 0.6 percent from 0.5 percent last month. Upward movements in the indices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco; clothing and footwear; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels; furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house; health and restaurant and miscellaneous goods were attributed to the seasonal factor of bigger production of selected goods for the forthcoming opening of classes. This seasonal factor however pushed down the education index while it did not affect the recreation and culture index.
