Month-on-Month Growth Rates

Philippines

     The monthly growth of the seasonally adjusted CPI for all itemsat the national level decelerated to 0.3 percentin April from 0.7 percent in March. Slower monthly increments were likewise registered in the indices of the following commodity groups:

  • Food and Non-alcoholic Beverages (0.4% from 1.0%);
  • Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (1.4% from 1.6%);
  • Non-food (0.1% from 0.5%);
  • Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (0.1% from 0.6%); and
  • Furnishing, Household Equipment and Routine Maintenance of the House (0.2% from 0.5%).

Movements of the indices in clothing and footwear remained at 0.3 percent; health and restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services, both at 0.4 percent; and recreation and culture and education, 0.2 percent.

     The seasonal factors such as the production of selected goods for the graduation season and bigger demand for construction materials during summer months pushed up the indices of the following commodity groups:

  • All Items;
  • Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco;
  • Non-food;
  • Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels;
  • Furnishing, Household Equipment and Routine Maintenance of the House; and
  • Restaurant and Miscellaneous Goods and Services.

These seasonal factors, however, pushed down the indices of food and non-alcoholic beverages; recreation and culture; and education. The indices of clothing and footwear and health were not affected by these seasonal factors (see Table 1).

National Capital Region (NCR)

     In NCR, the seasonally adjusted CPI for food and non-alcoholic beverages and furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house moved up at a slower pace at 0.5 percent in April from their previous month’s rates of 0.8 percent and 0.7 percent, respectively. Moreover, lower monthly increments were also recorded in the indices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco at 1.3 percent from 1.5 percent; non-food, 0.3 percent from 0.8 percent; education, 0.1 percent from 0.2 percent; and restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services, 0.6 percent from 1.2 percent. However, the index of recreation and culture exhibited a higher monthly gain of 0.3 percent from 0.2 percent in the previous month.

      Relative to the expected trend, the seasonal factors like the production of selected goods during the graduation season and bigger demand of construction materials during summer months pushed up the indices of the following commodity groups:

  • Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco;
  • Non-food;
  • Furnishing, Household Equipment and Routine Maintenance of the House; and
  • Restaurant and Miscellaneous Goods and Services.

On the contrary, these seasonal factors pushed down the indices of food and non-alcoholic beverages; recreation and culture; and education (see Table 2).

Areas Outside National Capital Region (AONCR)

     The month-on-month growth of seasonally adjusted CPI for all items in AONCR eased to 0.4 percent in April from 0.6 percent in March. Slower monthly hikes were likewise registered in the indices of food and non-alcoholic beverages at 0.6 percent from 0.9 percent; alcoholic beverages and tobacco, 1.7 percent from 2.1 percent; and health, 0.3 percent from 0.4 percent. In addition, a lower monthly rate of 0.1 percent was posted in the seasonally adjusted CPI for  housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels; furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house; and recreation and culture during the month. On the contrary, higher growths were recorded in the indices of non-food at 0.3 percent from 0.2 percent and restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services, 0.4 percent from 0.3 percent. The indices for clothing and footwear and education retained their previous month’s rates of 0.3 percent and 0.2 percent, respectively.

     The seasonal factors such as the production of selected commodities for the graduation and higher demand of construction materials during summer season pushed up the indices of the following commodity groups:

  • Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco;
  • Non-food;
  • Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels;
  • Furnishing, Household Equipment and Routine Maintenance of the House; and
  • Restaurant and Miscellaneous Goods and Services.

On the contrary, these seasonal factors pushed down the indices of food and non-alcoholic beverages; clothing and footwear; recreation and culture; and education. The indices for all items and health were not affected by these seasonal factors (see Table 3).
