The volume of hog production for the second quarter of 2018 was 557.27 thousand metric tons. This was a recovery from a 1.32 percent decline in production recorded in the second quarter of 2017 to a 2.81 percent increase in output this period. Eight (8) regions reported increases in production. Central Luzon, the top producing region for hog, registered the highest increase with 9.37 percent. Likewise, CALABARZON and Northern Mindanao posted positive growth in production with 2.32 percent and 4.88 percent increase, respectively. These three (3) regions contributed 44.35 percent to the total hog production. (Table 1)
As of July 1, 2018, total swine population reached 12.78 million heads. This was 1.86 percent higher compared with the previous year’s inventory of 12.55 million heads. (Table 2) Inventory in both backyard and commercial farms increased by 0.86 percent and 3.64 percent, respectively. Stocks in commercial farms shared 36.49 percent to the total swine population. The top five (5) regions with the highest inventory were Central Luzon CALABARZON, Western Visayas, Central Visayas and Northern Mindanao. These regions accounted for 55.59 percent of the country’s total swine inventory.
The average farmgate price of live hogs for slaughter from April to June 2018 increased by 7.65 percent, or from the PhP 109.51 per kilogram, liveweight in 2017, to PhP 117.88 per kilogram, liveweight this year. (Table 3)

This Swine Situation Report presents the swine industry in terms of volume of production, inventory by farm type and average farmgate price. This report was prepared to serve as ready reference for
our various clients and stakeholders in the agriculture sector. It is released quarterly in January, May, August and November every year.
Concepts and Definitions
Volume of Production refers to the volume of locally-raised animals disposed for slaughter which include animals shipped-out for slaughter. This is expressed in metric ton, liveweight.
Inventory refers to the actual number of domesticated animals present in the farm as of a specific reference date.
Farmgate Price refers to the price received by farmers, livestock and poultry raisers for the sale of their produce at the first point of sale net of freight.
