The October to December 2019 hog production was 597.51 thousand metric tons, liveweight. This was 9.8 percent lower than the 2018 output of 662.73 thousand metric tons, liveweight.

Relative to their 2018 production levels, seven regions reported decreases in production during the period. Central Luzon reported the highest decline of 38.1 percent, from 156.94 thousand metric tons, liveweight in 2018 to 97.22 thousand metric tons, liveweight in 2019.

Among the regions, CALABARZON was the highest producer of hogs at 103.10 thousand metric tons, liveweight. This was followed by Central Luzon and Northern Mindanao with production of 97.22 thousand metric tons, liveweight and 56.61 thousand metric tons, liveweight, respectively. These three regions accounted for 43.1 percent of the country’s total hog production. (Table 1)

As of 01 January 2020, the total swine inventory was estimated at 12.80 million heads. This was 0.7 percent higher compared with its previous year’s stocks of 12.71 million heads.

Population of swine in backyard farms at 7.97 million heads contracted by 2.4 percent, from 8.17 million heads in 2019 to 7.97 million heads in 2020. On the other hand, stocks in commercial farms at 4.82 million heads expanded by 6.2 percent from the previous year’s level of 4.54 million heads.

Among the regions, Central Luzon recorded the highest swine inventory of 2.16 million heads. This was followed by CALABARZON and Western Visayas with stocks of 1.58 million heads and 1.22 million heads, respectively. These three regions contributed 38.7 percent to the country’s total swine inventory. (Table 2)

In the fourth quarter of 2019, the average farmgate price of hogs upgraded for slaughter was PhP98.70 per kilogram, liveweight. This was 13.9 percent lower than the previous year’s price level of PhP114.70 per kilogram, liveweight.

The highest average farmgate price was recorded in December at PhP99.69 per kilogram, liveweight, while the lowest average farmgate price was noted in November at PhP97.08 per kilogram, liveweight. (Table 3)

TECHNICAL NOTES

This Swine Situation Report presents the swine industry in terms of volume of production, inventory by farm type and average farmgate price. This report was prepared to serve as ready reference for PSA’s various clients and stakeholders in the agriculture sector. It is released quarterly in January, May, August and November every year.

Concepts and Definitions

Volume of production refers to the volume of locally-raised swine disposed for slaughter including those which were shipped out to other regions/provinces for slaughter. This is expressed in metric ton, liveweight.
Inventory refers to the actual number of swine present in the farm as of a specific reference date.
Farmgate price refers to the price received by raisers for their produce at the location of farm. Thus, the marketing costs such as the transport and other marketing cost (if any) incurred in selling the produce are not included in the farmgate prices.
