Construction Materials Wholesale Price Index in the National Capital Region (2000=100) : February 2011

    The monthly rate of price movement in the Construction Materials Wholesale Price Index (CMWPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) recorded at 1.2 percent in February was higher than the 0.8 percent growth last January. An upward adjustment was posted in the index of sand and gravel at 0.2 percent from -0.3 percent; concrete products, 0.8 percent from 0.7 percent; plywood, 2.0 percent from 0.4 percent; lumber, 0.9 percent from 0.3 percent; reinforcing steel, 1.8 percent from 0.5 percent; structural steel, 1.9 percent from 0.1 percent; tileworks, 1.1 percent from 0.5 percent; doors, jambs and steel casement, 1.9 percent from 0.3 percent; electrical works, 1.5 percent from 0.1 percent; plumbing fixtures and accessories/waterworks, 1.0 percent from 0.3 percent; and painting works, 0.5 percent from 0.4 percent. On the other hand, slower rates were noted in the indexes of cement and fuels and lubricants while the rest of the commodity groups have zero growth during the month.

    On an annual basis, the growth rate of the CMWPI in NCR rose to 5.1 percent in February from 3.5 percent in January. This was mainly due to a higher annual increment observed in the index of fuels and lubricants at 11.9 percent in February from 7.1 percent in January. Moreover, annual increases were noticed in the indexes of the following commodity groups: concrete products (3.3% from 2.4%); cement (1.6% from zero growth); plywood (6.8% from 4.8%); lumber (12.0% from 11.7%); reinforcing steel (6.2% from 4.5%); structural steel (8.2% from 4.9%); tileworks (1.9% from 0.8%); doors, jambs and steel casement (4.0% from 2.1%); electrical works (3.0% from 1.7%); plumbing fixtures and accessories (1.8% from 0.8%); and painting works (2.5% from 2.1%). Slower annual add-ons were however seen in the indexes of hardware, G.I. sheet, glass and glass products and asphalt. The annual changes in the indexes of sand and gravel and PVC pipes remained at their previous month's rates while that for machinery and equipment rental index was zero.
