General Retail Price Index in the National Capital Region (1978=100) : June 2008

    The month-on-month growth rate of the General Retail Price Index (GRPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) moved up to 2.9 percent in June from 2.4 percent in May. The monthly price increments in crude materials, inedible except fuels were higher at 0.5 percent in June from 0.3 percent in May; mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, 11.4 percent from 6.5 percent; manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials, 4.8 percent from 2.1 percent; and miscellaneous manufactured articles, 0.4 percent from zero growth. Add-ons in the prices of machinery and transport equipment remained at 0.2 percent while the rest of the commodity groups posted slower monthly growth rates.

    Price hikes were registered in gravel, sand, lumber, plywood, lawanit, cement, steel bars, GI sheet and nails. Likewise, upward price adjustments were also observed in gasoline, kerosene, LPG, selected sanitary fixtures and clothing items.

  • Year-on-Year

    On an annual basis, the growth rate of the GRPI in NCR increased to 13.6 percent in June from 11.2 percent in May as all the commodity groups registered higher annual growth rates except chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats index whose annual growth rate remained at 2.8 percent. The annual growth rate of food picked up to 13.5 percent in June from 11.9 percent in May; beverages and tobacco, 5.2 percent from 5.0 percent; crude materials, inedible except fuels, 7.2 percent from 6.9 percent; mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, 39.6 percent from 29.9 percent; manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials, 11.5 percent from 6.6 percent; machinery and transport equipment, 1.8 percent from 1.5 percent; and miscellaneous manufactured articles, 6.0 percent from 5.6 percent.
