General Retail Price Index in the National Capital Region (2000=100) : September 2011

  • Month-on-Month

    On a monthly basis, the General Retail Price Index (GRPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) increased 0.3 percent in September from -0.1 percent in August. Higher increments were posted in the heavily weighted food index at 0.4 percent in September from -0.1 percent in August and manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials index at 0.6 percent from zero growth. In addition, the same August rate of 0.1 percent was registered in the indexes of beverages and tobacco, chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats, and miscellaneous manufactured articles. The rest of the commodity groups recorded zero growth.

    Price hikes were noted in fish, rice, corn, bakery products, fruits, vegetables, coffee and selected miscellaneous foods. Likewise, prices of steel bars, nails, tiles and sand paper were pegged higher during the month in review. 
     

  • Year-on-Year

    The annual growth rate of the GRPI in NCR picked up to 3.7 percent in September from 3.6 percent in August. The annual gain in the mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials index was higher at 18.2 percent in September from 17.0 percent in August; chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats, 2.4 percent from 2.3 percent; and manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials, 2.6 percent from 2.3 percent. On the other hand, annual uptick in beverages and tobacco index was slower at 3.1 percent from 3.3 percent and miscellaneous manufactured articles, 1.4 percent from 1.5 percent. The annual adjustment in machinery and equipment index remained at 2.1 percent while a zero growth was seen in the index of crude materials, inedible except fuels.
