The annual growth in the General Retail Price Index (GRPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) went up 0.5 percent in October 2015. It posted a 0.4 percent gain last month and in October 2014, 2.8 percent. The heavily-weighted food index recorded a higher annual mark-up of 2.6 percent. Meanwhile, annual increments were slower in the following indices: beverages and tobacco, 3.5 percent; chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats, 0.7 percent; and miscellaneous manufactured articles, 1.1 percent. Moreover, negative annual rates were noted in the indices of crude materials. inedible, except fuels at -2.8 percent; mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, -16.8 percent; manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials, -0.4 percent; and machinery and transport equipment, -0.6 percent.
Month-on-Month
Compared to its last month’s level, the GRPI in NCR increased by 0.2 percent in October.
Food index moved up by 0.6 percent due to higher prices in fish, vegetables, fruits and sugar.
Upward adjustments in the prices of petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel fuel and kerosene pushed up the index of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials by 0.2 percent.
Prices of selected cosmetics, soap and other washing and cleaning compounds generally went down during the month. Thus, the index of chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats declined by 0.4 percent.
The 0.2 percent drop in the index of manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials was attributed to price reductions in steel bars, tires and textile mill products.
The machinery and transport equipment index dropped by 0.1 percent as the price of electric stove was pegged lower during the month.
Price cuts in selected furniture and fixtures, undergarments and footwear effected a 0.1 percent decrease in the miscellaneous manufactured articles index.
No movement was seen in the indices of beverages and tobacco and crude materials, inedible except fuels.
