Year-on-Year

  • The year-on-year growth of the General Retail Price Index (GRPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) further moved up by 3.0 percent in September 2016. It was registered at 2.3 percent in August 2016 and 0.4 percent in September 2015. The uptrend was mainly due to the 6.7 percent annual mark-up in the heavily-weighted food index. Also contributing to the uptrend were the higher annual gains observed in the indices of manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials at 2.1 percent; machinery and transport equipment, 0.3 percent; and miscellaneous manufactured articles, 0.6 percent. Meanwhile, a slowdown in the annual increase of crude materials, inedible except fuels index at 0.6 percent was noted during the month. Moreover, the index for mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials continued to decline at -2.4 percent during the month. Annual growths in the indices of beverages and tobacco and chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats remained at 3.1 percent and 0.9 percent, respectively (Table 2).

By Commodity Group, Month-on-Month (Table 3)

Compared to a month ago level, the GRPI in NCR inched up 0.7 percent in September 2016. Last month, the growth was pegged at 0.3 percent.

  • Food index advanced by 1.5 percent during the month. Higher prices were observed in beef, pork, eggs, fresh fish, prawns, fresh fruits, vegetables and cooking oil.

  • Price increments in petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, LPG and kerosene pushed up the index for mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials by 1.8 percent.

  • The index for manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials picked up by 0.5 percent. Price hikes were seen in paper products, textile mill products, cement, glazed tiles, pottery, and selected metal products.

  • A 0.2 percent growth was still recorded in miscellaneous manufactured articles index. This can be attributed to higher prices of selected clothing, footwear items, sporting and athletic goods.

  • The machinery and transport equipment index went up 0.1 percent due to upward adjustments in the prices of selected electric lamps and fixtures.

  • A 0.2 percent decline in the index for crude materials, inedible except fuel was brought about by lower prices of gravel and sand.

  • The indices of beverages and tobacco and chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats exhibited a flat growth during the month.
