Month-on-Month Growth Rates

  • Philippines
  • The monthly growth of the seasonally adjusted CPI for all items at the national level went up to 0.5 percent in April from 0.2 percent in March. Except for restaurants and miscellaneous goods and services index which retained its last’s month’s rate of 0.3 percent, the growth rates of all the commodity groups rose during the month. A monthly gain was posted in alcoholic beverages and tobacco index at 1.0 percent in April from 0.3 percent in March; clothing and footwear index, 1.1 percent from 0.2 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels index, 0.6 percent from 0.2 percent; furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house index, 0.8 percent from 0.3 percent; health index, 0.7 percent from 0.3 percent; and recreation and culture and education indices, 0.4 percent from 0.1 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively.

    Seasonal factors such as the production of selected goods for the graduation season and the observed higher prices of construction materials during the summer season pushed up the indices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco; clothing and footwear; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house; and restaurants and miscellaneous goods and services. However, these seasonal factors pushed down the indices of health and education while no effect was seen in the index of recreation and culture.

  • National Capital Region (NCR)
  • On a monthly basis, the seasonally adjusted CPI in NCR for the following commodity groups increased in April: alcoholic beverages and tobacco, 0.7 percent from 0.2 percent; furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house, 0.2 percent from 0.1 percent; and education, 0.4 percent from 0.3 percent. The transport index dropped by -0.3 from zero growth. Meanwhile, the index for non-food remained stable during the month.

    Seasonal factors raised the indices for non-food; furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house; and transport. These seasonal factors however pulled down the education index.

  • Areas Outside the National Capital Region (AONCR)
  • The growth of the seasonally adjusted CPI for all the commodity groups except for education picked up during the month. Compared to their indices in March, the alcoholic beverages and tobacco index grew by 1.0 percent from 0.4 percent; clothing and footwear, 1.2 percent from 0.2 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, 0.8 percent from 0.5 percent; furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house, 1.1 percent from 0.5 percent; health, 0.8 percent from 0.3 percent; recreation and culture, 0.5 percent from zero growth; and restaurants and miscellaneous goods, 0.7 percent from 0.3 percent. Meanwhile, the rate of adjustment of the seasonally adjusted CPI for education was still at 0.4 percent.

    In AONCR, the indices for alcoholic beverages and tobacco; clothing and footwear; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels; furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house; and restaurants and miscellaneous goods were pushed up by the seasonal factors during the month. However, these seasonal factors pushed down the indices of recreation and culture; and education. No effect was noted in the health index.
