Seasonally Adjusted Consumer Price Index (2012=100) : October 2021

1. Philippines

At the country level, the deseasonalized CPI for all items picked up to 0.9 percent in October 2021, from 0.1 percent in September 2021.

Higher monthly increases were noted in the seasonally adjusted CPI of the following:

          a. Non-food, 0.8 percent from 0.2 percent;
          b. Clothing and footwear, 0.2 percent from 0.1 percent;
          c. Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, 1.1 percent from 0.5 percent;
          d. Furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house, 0.4 percent from 0.1 percent;
          e. Health, 0.5 percent from 0.3 percent;
          f.  Recreation and culture, 0.3 percent from 0.2 percent; and
          g. Restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services, 0.4 percent from 0.3 percent.

On the other hand, the seasonally adjusted CPI for food and non-alcoholic beverages dropped further to -0.7 percent during the month, from -0.6 percent in the previous month. The month-on-month growth of the deseasonalized CPI for alcoholic beverages and tobacco, and education, however, remained at 0.1 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively.

The seasonal factor such as the degree of demand of selected commodities during the season pushed down the indices of the following:

          a. All items;
          b. Food and non-alcoholic beverages;
          c. Alcoholic beverages and tobacco;
          d. Housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels;
          e. Furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance;
          f.  Recreation and culture; and
          g. Restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services.

This seasonal factor, however, pushed up the index of education, while it did not affect the indices of non-food, clothing and footwear, and health. (Table 1)
 

2. National Capital Region (NCR)

In NCR, the month-on-month growth of the seasonally adjusted CPI for all items went up to 0.3 percent in October 2021, from zero percent in September 2021.

Month-on-month increments were higher in the deseasonalized CPI of the following:

          a. Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, 0.6 percent from 0.3 percent;
          b. Non-food, 0.9 percent from 0.3 percent;
          c. Housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels, 1.5 percent from 0.7 percent;
          d. Health, 0.9 percent from 0.2 percent;
          e. Transport, 2.4 percent from 0.2 percent; and
          f.  Recreation and culture, 0.2 percent from 0.1 percent.

In addition, the seasonally adjusted CPI for furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house, and education rose to 0.2 percent during the month, from zero percent in the previous month.

Meanwhile, the month-on-month uptick in the deseasonalized CPI for clothing and footwear slowed down to 0.1 percent in October 2021, from 0.2 percent in September 2021. Moreover, the seasonally adjusted CPI for food non-alcoholic beverages dropped further to -1.4 percent during the month from -1.2 percent in the previous month, while that for restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services moved at its previous month’s rate of 0.1 percent.

The seasonal factor such as the degree of demand for selected goods and services during the season pushed down the indices of the following:

          a. All items;
          b. Food and non-alcoholic beverages;
          c. Alcoholic beverages and tobacco;
          d. Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels;
          e. Furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house; and
          f.  Recreation and culture;

However, this seasonal factor pushed up the indices of health, transport, and education.

This seasonal factor did not affect the indices of non-food, clothing and footwear, and restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services. (Table 2)
 

3. Areas Outside National Capital Region (AONCR)

The seasonally adjusted CPI for all items in AONCR moved up at a faster pace of 0.2 percent in October 2021, from 0.1 percent in September 2021.

Higher monthly upticks in the deseasonalized CPI were noted in the  following:

          a. Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, 0.4 percent from 0.2 percent;
          b. Non-food, 0.7 percent from 0.1 percent;
          c. Clothing and footwear, 0.3 percent from 0.2 percent;
          d. Housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels, 1.0 percent from 0.5 percent;
          e. Furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house, 0.5 percent from 0.2 percent;
          f.  Health, 0.5 percent from 0.3 percent;
          g. Recreation and culture, 0.4 percent from 0.3 percent; and
          h. Restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services, 0.6 percent from 0.3 percent.

The seasonally adjusted CPI for food and non-alcoholic beverages and education moved at their respective previous month’s growth rates of -0.4 percent and 0.5 percent.

The seasonal factor like the degree of demand for selected goods and services during the season pushed down the indices of the following:

          a. All items;
          b. Food and non-alcoholic beverages;
          c. Alcoholic beverages and tobacco;
          d. Housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels;
          e. Furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house;
          f.  Health;
          g. Recreation and culture; and
          h. Restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services.

However, this seasonal factor  pushed up the index of education, while it did not affect the indices of non-food, and clothing and footwear. (Table 3)
