Updates on October-December 2020 Palay and Corn Estimates, 01 November 2020

HIGHLIGHTS

The updated October to December 2020 production on palay and corn based on standing crop as of 01 November 2020 may decrease from October to December 2020 forecast, but higher than the October to December 2019 final estimates.

PALAY

1. Based on standing crop as of 01 November 2020, the probable palay production may decrease to 7.54 million metric tons or by -2.6 percent from the initial estimate of 7.74 million metric tons as of 01 October 2020. The updated October to December 2020 estimated palay production indicates an uptrend of 0.6 percent from previous years same period output of 7.49 million metric tons. (Table 1 and Figure 1)

2. Harvest area may decrease by -0.8 percent, from 1,840.11 thousand hectares in the same period of 2019. Yield per hectare may drop to 4.13 metric tons, from 4.07 metric tons in the same period of the previous year. (Table 1)

3. About 1,119.21 thousand hectares or 61.3 percent of the updated standing crop have been harvested. (Tables 1 and 2)

4. As for the farmers' planting intentions for October to December 2020, 426.34 thousand hectares or 36.8 percent of the perceived area have been actually planted. (Table 3)

5. Of the total area of standing palay to be harvested for January to March 2021, 38.1 percent were at the vegetative stage, 22.9 percent at the reproductive stage, and 39.1 percent at the maturing stage. (Table 4 and Figure 2)

CORN

1. The probable corn production for October to December 2020, based on standing crop as of 01 November 2020, may reduce to 1.68 million metric tons, lower by -0.4 percent than the estimated corn production of 1.69 million metric tons as of 01 October 2020. The updated estimate of corn production for October to December 2020 may be higher by 1.4 percent from the previous year's same period level of 1.66 million metric tons (Table 5 and Figure 3).

2. Harvest area may rise to 561.79 thousand hectares, from 559.03 thousand hectares in the same period of 2019. Yield per hectare may increase to 2.99 metric tons from the 2.97 metric tons in the same period of the previous year. (Table 5)

3. About 245.27 thousand hectares or 43.7 percent of the updated standing crop has been harvested. (Tables 5 and 6)

4. Around 279.31 thousand hectares or 38.8 percent of the planting intentions for October to December 2020 crop have been realized. (Table 7)

5. Of the total area of 595.82 thousand hectares of standing crop for the October to December 2020 harvests, 56.2 percent were at vegetative stage, 25.7 percent at reproductive stage, and 18.1 percent at maturing stage. (Table 8 and Figure4)
