Updates on July-September 2020 Palay and Corn Estimates, 01 September 2020

HIGHLIGHTS

The updated July to September 2020 production on palay based on standing crop as of 01 September 2020 may slightly drop from the July to September 2020 forecasts. On the other hand, the probable corn output may be higher than the July to September 2020 forecasts. Both the updated production on palay and corn based on standing crop as of 01 September 2020 may increase from July to September 2019 final estimates.

PALAY

1. The probable palay production for July-September 2020 based on standing crop as of 01 September 2020 (updated) may reach 3.542 million metric tons, 0.1 percent lower than the initial estimate of 3.545 million metric tons as of 01 July 2020. The updated July-September 2020 estimated palay production indicates a possible uptrend of 16.1 percent, from previus year's same period output of 3.051 milliom metric tons. (Table 1 and Figure 1)

2. Harvest  area  may  increase  by 15.7 percent, from 748.87 thousand hectares in 2019. Yield per hectare may may rise to 4.12 metric tons, from 4.11 metric tons in the same period of the previous year. (Table 1)

3. About 310.54 thousand hectares or 36.1 percent of the updated standing crop have been harvested. (Table 1 and 2)

4. As for the farmer’s planting intentions for July to September 2020, 1,483.81 thousand hectares or 81.4 percent of the perceived area have been actually planted. (Table 3)

5. Of the total area of standing palay to be harvested for October to December 2020, 30.0 percent were at the vegetative stage, 45.9 percent at the reproductive stage, and 24.1 percent at the maturing stage. (Table 4 and Figure 2)

CORN

1. Corn production for July to September 2020, based on standing crop as of 01 September 2020 (updated), may reach 2.825 million metric tons, higher by 0.3 percent than the estimated corn production of 2.816 million metric tons as of 01 July 2020. The updated estimate of corn production for July to September 2020 may be higher by 3.7 percent from the previous year's same period level of 2.723 million metric tons (Table 5 and Figure 3)

2. Harvest area may increase to 919.51 thousand hectares, from 874.40 thousand hectares in 2019. Yield per hectare may decrease to 3.07 metric tons, from the 3.11 metric tons in the same period of previous year. (Table 5)

3. About 523.21 thousand hectares or 56.9 percent of the updated standing crop has been harvested. (Tables 5 and 6)

4. Around 365.60 thousand hectares or 64.8 percent of the planting intentions for July to September 2020 crop have been realized. (Table 7)

5. Of the total area of 761.93 thousand hectares of standing crop for the October to December 2020 harvests, 24.5 percent were at vegetative stage, 24.5 percent at reproductive stage, and 51.0 percent at maturing stage. (Table 8 and Figure 4).
