Updates on July-September 2020 Palay and Corn Estimates, 01 August 2020

HIGHLIGHTS

The updated July to September 2020 production on palay and com based on standing crop as of 01 August 2020 may increase from both July to September 2020 forecast and July to September 2019 final estimates.

PALAY

1. Based on standing crop as of 01 August 2020 (updated), the probable palay production may increase to 3.551 million metric tons or by 0.2 percent from the initial estimate of 3.545 million metric tons as of 01 July 2020. The updated July to September 2020 estimated palay production indicates a possible uptrend of 16.4 percent, from previous year's same period output of 3.051 million metric tons. (Table 1 and Figure 1)

2. Harvest area may increase by 15.7 percent, from 742.87 thousand hectares in 2019. Yield per hectares may rise to 4.13 metric tons, from 4.11 metric tons in the same period of previous year. (Table 1)

3. About 81.20 thousand hectares or 9.5 percent of the updated standing crop  have been harvested. (Table 1 and 2)

4. As for the farmer's palnting intentions for July to September 2020, 1,028.70 thousand hectares or 56.5 percent of the perceived area have been actually planted. (Table 3)

5. Of the total area of standing palay to be harvested for October to December 2020, 62.7 percent were at the vegetative stage, 26.5 percent at the reproductive stage, and 10.7 percent at the maturing stage. (Table 4 and Figure 2)

CORN

1. The probable corn production for July to September 2020, based on standing crop as of 01 August 2020 (updated), may reach to 2.817 million metric tons, higher than the estimated corn production of 2.816 million metric tons as of 01 July 2020. The updated estimate of corn production for July to September 2020 may be higher by 3.4 percent from the previous year's same period level of 2.723 million metric tons (Table 5 and Figure 3).

2. Harvest area may rise to 919.58 thousand hectares, from 874.40 thousand hectares in 2019. Yield per hectare may decrease to 3.06 metric tons from the 3.11 metric tons in the same period of previous year. (Table 5)

3. About 149.73 thousand hectares or 16.3 percent of the updated standing crop has been harvested. (Tables 5 and 6)

4. Around 134.32 thousand hectares or 23.8 percent of the planting intentions for July to September 2020 crop have been realized. (Table 7)

5. Of the total area of 904.18 thousand hectares of standing crop for the October to December 2020 harvests, 16.8 percent were at vegetative stage, 47.4 percent at reproductive stage, and 35.8 percent at maturing stage. (Table 8 and Figure 4)
