Updates on April-June 2020 Palay and Corn Estimates, 01 June 2020

HIGHLIGHTS

The updated April-June 2020 production on palay and corn based on standing crop as of 01 June 2020 may increase from both April-June 2020 forecast and April-June 2019 final estimates.

PALAY

1. The probable palay production for April-June 2020 based on standing crop as of 01 June 2020 (updated) may reach 4.12 million metric tons or 0.13 percent higher than the initial estimate as of 01 April 2020 of 4.11 million metric tons. The updated April-June 2020 estimated palay production indicates a possible uptrend of 6.85 percent in the period April-June 2020, from previous year’s output of 3.85 million metric tons. (Table 1 and Figure 1)

2. Harvest area may increase by 4.46 percent, from 915.32 thousand hectares in 2019. Yield per hectare may rise to 4.31 metric tons, from 4.21 metric tons in the previous year. (Table 1)

3. About 832.22 thousand hectares or 87.04 percent of the updated standing crop have been harvested. (Table 2) 

4. As for the farmer’s planting intentions for April-Jun 2020, 416.89 thousand hectares or 49.17 percent of the perceived area have been actually planted. (Table 3)

5. Of the total area of standing palay to be harvested for July-September 2020, 51.57 percent were at the vegetative stage, 26.54 percent at the reproductive stage, and 21.89 percent at the maturing stage. (Table 4 and Figure 2)

CORN

1. Corn production for April-June 2020, based on standing crop as of 01 June 2020 (updated), may reach to 1.37 million metric tons, higher by 0.90 percent than the estimated corn production as of 01 April 2020 of 1.35 million metric tons. The updated estimate of corn production for April-June 2020 may be higher by 16.12 percent from the previous year’s level of 1.17 million metric tons (Table 5 and Figure 3).

2. Harvest area may rise to 393.77 thousand hectares, from 377.04 thousand hectares in 2019. Yield per hectare may increase to 3.46 metric tons from the 3.11 metric tons in the previous year. (Table 5)

3. About 292.68 thousand hectares or 74.33 percent of the updated standing crop has been harvested. (Table 6)

4. Around 614.92 thousand hectares or 68.97 percent of the planting intentions for April-June 2020 crop have been realized. (Table 7)

5. Of the total area of 716.00 thousand hectares of standing crop for the July-September 2020 harvests, 63.50 percent were at vegetative stage, 22.99 percent at reproductive stage, and 13.51 percent at maturing stage. (Table 8 and Figure 4)
