HIGHLIGHTS

The updated April-June 2020 production on palay and corn, based on standing crop as of 01 May 2020, may decline from April-June 2020 forecast but higher than the April-June 2019 final estimates.

PALAY

1. Based on standing crop as of 01 May 2020 (updated), the probable palay production may decrease to 4.10 million metric tons or by 0.22 percent from the initial estimate of 4.11 million metric tons as of 01 April 2020. The updated April-June 2020 estimated palay production indicates a possible uptrend of 6.47 percent in the period April-June 2020, from previous year’s output of 3.85 million metric tons. (Table 1 and Figure 1)

2. Harvest area may increase by 4.50 percent, from 915.32 thousand hectares in 2019. Yield per hectare may rise to 4.29 metric tons, from 4.21 metric tons in the previous year. (Table 1)

3. About 631.30 thousand hectares or 66.02 percent of the updated standing crop have been harvested. (Tables 1 and 2)

4. As for the farmer’s planting intentions for April-June 2020, 167.21 thousand hectares or 19.72 percent of the perceived area have been actually planted. (Table 3)

5. Of the total area of standing palay for July-September 2020 harvests, 37.09 percent were at vegetative stage, 20.16 percent at reproductive stage, and 42.75 percent at maturing stage. (Table 4 and Figure 2)

CORN

1. The probable corn production for April-June 2020 based on standing crop as of 01 May 2020 (updated) may rise to 1.354 million metric tons, higher by 0.40 percent than the estimated corn production of 1.349 million metric tons as of 01 April 2020. The updated estimate of corn production for April-June 2020 may be higher by 15.55 percent from the previous year’s level of 1.172 million metric tons. (Table 5 and Figure 3)

2. Harvest area may rise to 393.01 thousand hectares, from 377.04 thousand hectares in 2019. Yield per hectare may increase to 3.45 metric tons from the 3.11 metric tons level in the previous year. (Table 5)

3. About 203.80 thousand hectares or 51.86 percent of the updated standing crop has been harvested. (Tables 5 and 6)

4. Around 201.57 thousand hectares or 22.61 percent of the planting intentions for April-June 2020 crop have been realized. (Table 7)

5. Of the total area of 390.79 thousand hectares of standing crop to be harvested for July-September 2020, 57.96 percent were at vegetative stage, 20.00 percent at reproductive stage, and 22.04 percent at maturing stage. (Table 8 and Figure 4)
