Updates on January-March 2022 Palay and Corn Estimates, 01 March 2022

HIGHLIGHTS

The updated January to March 2022 production on palay based on standing crop as of 01 March 2022 may be lower than the January to March 2021 estimated production. On the other hand, the probable corn output may be higher than the January to March 2021 estimated production.

PALAY 
1. The estimated palay production for January to March 2022 may decrease to 4.61 million metric tons or by -0.3 percent based on standing crop as of 01 March 2022, from its estimate of 4.63 million metric tons in the period January to March 2021. The updated estimate of palay production for the period of January to March 2022 as of 01 March 2022 is lower by -0.1 percent from its estimate of 4.62 million metric tons as of 01 January 2022. (Table 1 and Figure 1)

2. The estimated harvest area for the period of January to March 2022 may decrease to 1,139.11 thousand hectares or by -0.8 percent, from 1,148.23 thousand hectares in the same period of 2021. On the other hand, yield per hectare may increase to 4.05 metric tons, from 4.03 metric tons in the same period of the previous year. (Table 1)

3. About 597.43 thousand hectares or 52.4 percent of the 1,139.11 thousand hectares updated area of standing crop have been harvested as of 01 March 2022. (Tables 1 and 2)

4. Of the updated harvested area based on standing crop, the actual production was registered at 2.22 million metric tons as of 01 March 2022. (Table 2)

5. As for the farmer’s planting intentions for January to March 2022, 786.80 thousand hectares or 82.5 percent of foreseen area have been planted. (Table 3)

6. Of the total area of standing palay to be harvested for April to June 2022, 23.9 percent were at the vegetative stage, 39.4 percent at the reproductive stage, and 36.7 percent at the maturing stage. (Table 4 and Figure 2)

CORN

1. Based on standing crop, the updated corn production for the period of January to March 2022 as of 01 March 2022 may increase to 2.449 million metric tons or by 0.2 percent, from its estimate of 2.445 million metric tons in the same period of 2021. The updated estimate of corn production for the period of January to March 2022 was lower by -0.4 percent from its estimate of 2.458 million metric tons as of 01 January 2022. (Table 5 and Figure 3)

2. Harvest area for the period of January to March 2022 may decrease to 671.40 thousand hectares, from 685.60 thousand hectares in the same period of 2021. Yield per hectare may increase to 3.65 metric tons from the 3.57 metric tons in the same period of the previous year. (Table 5)

3. About 402.20 thousand hectares or 59.9 percent of the 671.40 thousand hectares updated area of standing crop have been harvested as of 01 March 2022. (Tables 5 and 6)

4. Of the updated harvested area based on standing crop, the actual production was recorded at 1.35 million metric tons as of `01 March 2022. (Table 6)

5. Around 274.89 thousand hectares or 64.9 percent of the planting intentions for January to March 2022 have been planted. (Table 7)

6. Of the total area of 542.31 thousand hectares of standing crop for the April to June 2022 harvests, 19.1 percent were at vegetative stage, 33.0 percent at reproductive stage, and 47.8 percent at maturing stage. (Table 8 and Figure 4).
