Updates on January-March 2023 Palay and Corn Estimates, 01 February 2023

HIGHLIGHTS

Based on standing crop as of 01 February 2023, the estimated palay and corn production for the period of January to March 2023 may increase its level compared with the same period of 2022. 

PALAY 
1. The estimated palay production for January to March 2023 may increase to 4.79 million metric tons or by 5.4 percent based on standing crop as of 01 February 2023 from its actual estimate of 4.54 million metric tons in the same period last year. On the other hand, the updated estimate of palay production as of 01 February 2023 for the period of January to March 2023 showed a decline of -1.1 percent from its estimate of 4.84 million metric tons as of 01 January 2023. (Table 1 and Figure 1)

2. The estimated harvest area for the period of January to March 2023 may increase to 1.18 million hectares or by 3.3 percent based on standing crop, from 1.14 million hectares actual estimate of harvest area in the same period in 2022. The yield per hectare of palay for the period of January to March 2023 may increase to 4.06 metric tons or by 2.0 percent based on standing crop, from 3.98 metric tons actual estimate in the same period of the previous year. 3. About 236.06 thousand hectares or 20.0 percent of the 1,177.85 thousand hectares updated harvest area of standing crop have been harvested as of 01 February 2023. (Tables 1 and 2)

4. Out of the 236.06 thousand hectares area harvested as of 01 February 2023, the actual production was recorded at 917.59 thousand metric tons. (Table 2)

5. Of the total area of 941.79 thousand hectares of standing crop yet to be harvested as of 01 February 20237.6 percent were at the vegetative stage, 48.1 percent at the reproductive stage, and 44.3 percent at the maturing stage. (Table 3 and Figure 2)

CORN
1. Based on standing crop as of 01 February 2023, the updated corn production for the period of January to March 2023 may increase to 2.560 million metric tons or by 4.9 percent from its actual estimate of 2.441 million metric tons in the same period of 2022. Meanwhile, the updated estimate of corn production as of 01 February 2023 based on standing crop exhibited a reduction of -0.1 percent from its estimate of 2.564 million metric tons as of 01 January 2023. (Table 4 and Figure 3)

2. Harvest area for the period of January to March 2023 may increase to 690.72 thousand hectares or by 2.9 percent based on standing crop, from 671.20 thousand hectares actual estimate of harvest area in the same period of 2022. Yield per hectare may increase to 3.71 metric tons or by 1.9 percent based on standing crop from 3.64 metric tons actual estimate in the same period of the previous year. (Table 4)

3. About 206.38 thousand hectares or 29.9 percent of the 690.72 thousand hectares updated area of standing crop have been harvested as of 01 February 2023. (Tables 4 and 5)

4. From the area harvested as of 01 February 2023 at 206.38 thousand hectares, the actual production was recorded at 709.74 thousand metric tons. (Table 5)

5. Of the total area of 484.35 thousand hectares standing corn yet to be harvested as of 01 February 20235.0 percent were at the vegetative stage, 49.9 percent at the reproductive stage, and 45.1 percent were at the maturing stage. (Table 6 and Figure 4)
