Total volume of cattle production for the third quarter of 2018 was estimated at 59.48 thousand metric ton, liveweight. This was 0.29 percent higher than the previous year’s output of 59.31 thousand metric ton, liveweight. (Table 1)

Among the regions which reported increases in production during the period were Northern Mindanao, Ilocos Region, Central Luzon and SOCCSKSARGEN. These regions contributed 39.66 percent to the country’s total cattle production.

 

 

As of 01 July 2018, the total cattle inventory was estimated at 2.55 million heads. This was 0.37 percent lower compared with the previous year’s inventory of 2.56 million heads. (Table 2)

Of the total cattle inventory, cow comprised the largest share at 42.81 percent. This was followed by yearling and heifer with a share of 18.42 percent and 16.84 percent, respectively. Bull accounted for 13.42 percent while other ages which include castrated and ready to breed bull shared 8.51 percent of the total cattle inventory.

 

The third quarter 2018 average farmgate price of cattle for slaughter was higher by 8.91 percent from its previous year’s price level. The increase was from PhP 100.30 per kilogram, liveweight in 2017, to PhP 109.23 per kilogram, liveweight this year. (Table 3)

This Cattle Situation Report presents the cattle industry in terms of volume of production, inventory by farm type and average farmgate price. The report waspreparedto serve as ready reference for PSA’s various clients and stakeholders in the agriculture sector. It is released quarterly in January, May, August and November every year.

Concepts and Definitions

Volume of Production refers to the volume of locally-raised animals disposed for slaughter which include animals shipped-out for slaughter. This is expressed in metric tons, liveweight.
Inventory refers to the actual number of domesticated animalspresent in the farm as of a specific reference date.
Farmgate Price refers to the price received by farmers, livestock and poultry raisers for the sale of their produce at the first point of sale net of freight.
