The month-on-month growth rate of the General Retail Price Index (GRPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) dropped to -0.1 percent in February from 0.9 percent in January. Declines were registered in the price indexes of the heavily weighted food at -0.4 percent from 1.5 percent and in manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials at -0.2 percent from zero growth. The crude materials, inedible except fuels and miscellaneous manufactured articles retained their previous month's rates of zero growth and 0.1 percent respectively. The rest of the commodity groups posted higher positive monthly rates.

Price reductions in fresh fish, vegetables, sugar, cooking oil, and selected construction materials such as tanguile lumber, lawanit, nails and steel bars contributed to the downtrend.

Higher annual rates were noticed in the prices of food items at 8.2 percent in February from 8.1 percent in January and in chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats at 3.4 percent from 3.1 percent. Slower annual gains were posted in the rest of the commodity groups.
