  • Month-on-Month

The month-on-month growth rate of the General Retail Price Index (GRPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) further dropped to -1.6 percent in October from -1.2 percent in September due to the continued reductions in the prices of the items in the heavily weighted food index at -0.9 percent from -0.3 percent. Moreover, the beverages and tobacco index also declined to -0.3 percent from 0.7 percent; mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, -6.9 percent from -8.7 percent; and manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials, -3.6 percent from -1.6 percent. On the other hand, the monthly growth rate of chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats index was higher at 0.6 percent from 0.2 percent while that of machinery and transport equipment index remained at 0.1 percent. Prices of crude materials, inedible except fuels and miscellaneous manufactured articles generally remained stable as they continued to register zero growth rate.

Prices of selected food items such as chicken, pork, rice and vegetables were generally lower during the month in review. The continuing series of price rollbacks in gasoline and LPG and the price decreases in selected construction materials also contributed to the downtrend.

  • Year-on-Year

On an annual basis, the growth rate of the GRPI in NCR further slowed down to 8.6 percent in October from 11.6 percent in September. Annual price adjustment in the food index further decelerated to 8.5 percent in October from 10.8 percent in September; beverages and tobacco, 6.8 percent from 7.2 percent; mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, 20.8 percent from 33.7 percent; manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials, 5.7 percent from 9.9 percent; and miscellaneous manufactured articles, 6.4 percent from 6.5 percent. The annual growth rate of chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats index was however higher at 3.3 percent from 2.8 percent while that for crude materials, inedible except fuels remained at 8.8 percent.
