Compared to April 2012, the GRPI in NCR dropped by -0.1 percent in May from 0.2 percent in April. This can be attributed to the continuous decline in mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials index at -3.6 percent in May from -0.7 percent in April. Moreover, the monthly increment in beverages and tobacco index slowed down to 0.2 percent from 0.4 percent and chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats index, 0.1 percent from 0.4 percent. The change in the food index remained at its April rate of 0.2 percent while the indices for manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials, machinery and transport equipment and miscellaneous manufactured articles were zero.
Price roll backs were noted in gasoline, LPG, diesel fuel and kerosene. In addition, prices of selected electrical wires also went down during the period.
Year-on-Year
The annual growth in the General Retail Price Index (GRPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) increased to 1.2 percent in May from 0.5 percent in April as the annual adjustment in crude materials, inedible except fuels index picked up to 0.7 percent from -21.0 percent. Slower or negative annual movements were registered in the rest of the commodity groups with those for food and miscellaneous manufactured articles indices remaining at 0.7 percent and 1.4 percent, respectively.
