Food, Beverages and Tobacco (FBT) and Non-FBT Items
(NCR and AONCR - June 2003)

  1. CPI of Food, Beverages and Tobacco (FBT): National Capital Region (NCR) and Areas Outside the National Capital Region (AONCR)

The seasonally adjusted CPI of FBT items in NCR and AONCR correspondingly went up to 155.5 and 159.3 in June from their respective May levels of 152.5 and 158.5.

Seasonal factors such as the weather disturbances that were experienced during the month and the opening of classes did not push up prices of FBT items in the two areas relative to the expected trend.

On a monthly basis, prices of seasonally adjusted FBT items in NCR and AONCR increased respectively to 2.0 percent and 0.5 percent in June from their corresponding May rates of 0.1 percent and 0.3 percent.

  2. CPI of Non-FBT items: National Capital Region (NCR) and Areas Outside the National Capital Region (AONCR)

The seasonally adjusted CPI of non-FBT items in NCR picked up to 192.1 in June from 191.1 in May while that in AONCR its level slightly went down to 186.4 from 186.5.

Higher demand for school supplies, clothing and footwear items brought about by the opening of classes pushed up prices of non-FBT items in NCR and AONCR. The increase of tuition fees every start of the school year observed in many regions including the NCR also pushed up prices of non-FBT items in the two areas.

The month-on-month inflation of the seasonally adjusted CPI for non-FBT items in NCR grew to 0.5 percent in June from 0.1 percent in May. On the other hand, inflation of the seasonally adjusted CPI for non-FBT items in AONCR posted a negative rate of 0.1 percent from 0.3 percent.
