Philippines

     At the national level, the seasonally adjusted CPI for all items picked up by 0.8 percent in December 2019, from 0.2 percent in November 2019. Higher monthly increases were posted in the indices of food and non-alcoholic beverages at 1.1 percent in December from 0.2 percent in November; clothing and footwear, 0.2 percent from 0.1 percent; and housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels, 0.6 percent from 0.4 percent. On the other hand, increments in the indices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco decelerated to 1.3 percent from 1.5 percent; furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house, 0.3 percent from 0.4 percent; and health, and restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services, both at 0.2 percent from 0.3 percent. The non-food index retained its previous month’s rate of 0.3 percent; recreation and culture, 0.2 percent; and education, 0.1 percent.

The seasonal factor like the higher demand for selected goods and services during the Christmas season pushed up the indices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, and recreation and culture. This seasonal factor, however, pushed down the indices of the following commodity groups relative to the expected trend:

  • All items;
  • Alcoholic beverages and tobacco;
  • Non-food;
  • Housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels;
  • Furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house;
  • Health;
  • Education; and
  • Restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services.

Meanwhile, clothing and footwear index was not affected by this seasonal factor (see Table 1).

     In NCR, the seasonally adjusted CPI for food and non-alcoholic beverages went up by 1.4 percent in December 2019, from 0.1 percent in November 2019; non-food, 0.5 percent from 0.3 percent; and furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house, 0.3 percent from 0.2 percent. Meanwhile, mark-ups in the indices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco slowed down to 1.0 percent from 1.7 percent; and education, and restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services, both at 0.2 percent from 0.3 percent. Movement of recreation and culture index remained at 0.2 percent during the month.

     The bigger demand for selected goods and services during the Yuletide season pushed up the index for food and non-alcoholic beverages. On the contrary, this seasonal factor pushed down the indices of the following commodity groups:

  • Alcoholic beverages and tobacco;
  • Non-food;
  • Furnishing, household, equipment and routine maintenance of the house;
  • Recreation and culture;
  • Education; and
  • Restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services (see Table 2).
