HIGHLIGHTS

The updated palay and corn production for April-June 2019 based on standing crop as of 01 May 2019 may decrease from the April 2019 round estimates.

PALAY

  • Based on standing crop as of 01 May 2019, the probable palay production for April-June 2019 may decline to 3.83 million metric tons or by  1.7 percent. This may drop by 6.5 percent from the previous year’s level of 4.09 million metric tons (Figure1). Likewise, harvest area may contract to 905.56 thousand hectares from the 932.79 thousand hectares in 2018 level. Yield per hectare may decline to 4.22 metric tons from the 4.38 metric tons of the previous year’s level.

  • Of the updated standing crop, 63.9 percent of 905.56 thousand hectares have been harvested.
  • Of the 453.92 thousand hectares of standing crop, 33.0 percent were still at vegetative stage, 16.9 percent at reproductive stage, and 50.1 percent at maturing stage (Figure 2).
  • About 127.12 thousand hectare or 15.2 percent of the farmers’ planting intentions for April-June 2019 have been realized.

CORN

  • The probable corn production for April-June  2019  may  decline  to 1.15 million metric tons from the April round estimates of 1.17 million metric tons or by 1.5 percent. This may drop by 10.2 percent from the previous year’s output of 1.28 million metric tons. Harvest area may possibly decrease to 374.65 thousand hectares from the 392.36 thousand hectares in 2018. Yield per hectare may decline to 3.08 metric tons from 3.27 metric tons level in 2018.

  • About 57.7 percent of 374.65 thousand hectares updated standing crop have been harvested.
  • Of the 314.08 thousand hectares standing crop, 48.0 percent were still at vegetative stage, 24.9 percent at reproductive stage, and 27.1 percent at maturing stage.
  • As to farmers’ planting intention for April-June 2019, 18.1 percent of 858.98 thousand hectares have been actually planted.
